Reflections
I was able to observe the structure and organization of the healthcare team while in the operating room. I was able to learn the role and place of each person inside the operating room. This allowed me to learn their responsibilities and determine who answered to who. A lot of delegation was done pre and post operatively and it was nice to see the team work together to achieve the goal for the patients plan of care. I learned almost everyone in the healthcare is a leader in their own way in every setting, being passive in patient care is not acceptable.
I developed my leadership skills by learning the role of nursing in the operating room. This will allow me to take this information into my clinicals and future practice. Other miscellaneous takeaways is I learned the tasks and roles of the OR nurse and scrub techs. I grew a great deal in my understanding of the surgical process. It was also a great opportunity to see how different providers interacted as part of the health care team. The CRNA is mostly isolated from other team members with the exception of the surgeon calling for a deeper sedation. Therefore, delegation of tasks was almost non-existent. Even though there were no certified nurse assistants present in the operating room, I was still able to translate what I learned from that experience to my clinicals when it came to delegation. The insights I gained from this experience makes me more excited than before to begin practicing.
